GLOBE EU Speed Dating for Climate Change
On 8th October a cross-party group of Members of the European Parliament and assistants had an opportunity to meet the delegates of twenty of the most active EU climate policy, cross-range stakeholders in a Speed Dating event at the European Parliament, with the photo exhibit Why Sustainable Development? by Yann-Arthus Bertrand in the background.
To our knowledge, this is the first time that an event of this type has taken place in the European Parliament. At a time when legislators have to wade through hundreds of invitations to lengthy dinners, briefings and receptions from all sorts of interest groups, this initiative sought to make it easier for MEPs, particularly newcomers in the European Parliament, to establish a high-quality, personal contact with the largest possible number of relevant organisations in the shortest possible time.
Daniela Vincenti Mitchener, managing editor of Euractiv kindly agreed to act as a toastmaster and ensured that the participants stuck to the rules of speed dating: every organisation delegate had the undivided attention of one legislator for exactly five minutes time, after which the MEPs had to move on to the next table. Businesscards, information on their respective key policy priorities and smiles were exchanged between the MEPs and the delegates for over one and a half hour. The GLOBE Secretariat hopes this encounter will be the beginning of a fruitful co-operation with the Members of GLOBE EU over the next 5 years.

Kriton Arsenis MEP (S&D, Greece) found GLOBE EU Speed Dating particularly useful in his work
with regards to global environmental threats.
