New Greek Focal Point: ENVI Committee Chairman Costas Cartalis takes over from Spyros Kouvelis
On 11 January Mr Costas Cartalis MP announced his willingness to become GLOBE Europe's new Focal Point at the Hellenic Parliament. Our former Focal Point, Spyros Kouvelis MP, took office as Deputy Foreign Minister of Greece after the general elections in October 2009.
Mr Cartalis was elected Member of the Parliament in 2007 (prefect of Magnesia) and was re-elected in 2009. During his first parliamentary term he was speaker for Education and Culture and member of the Parliamentary Committee for Research and Technology. In his second term and as of November 10, 2009 he is the President – elect of the Standing Committee for the Environment of the Hellenic Parliament and Member of the Parliamentary Committee for the Economy.
He is member of the Faculty of the University of Athens since 1994 and at present Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Physics.
During the period 2000-2004 he served as the General Secretary for the Olympic Games at the Ministry of Culture. For his contribution to the preparation of the Olympic Games he was awarded with the medal of the city of Athens and the Olympic Medal of the IOC. During the period 2003-2004 he was the first President of the public company “Olympic Properties” and was also elected member of the Management Board of the International Olympic Academy.
During the period 2005-2007, he was appointed President of the Institute of Strategic and Development Studies (ISTAME) – Andreas Papandreou, the “think tank” of the Greek Socialist Party (PASOK).
He has published over 200 scientific articles in accredited journals. He has served as Member of the Management Board as well as elected member of the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency, member of the Steering Committee of the Centre for Earth Observation, and member of scientific committees in Greece and in the EU.
