The second session of the Global Platform is scheduled to take place in Geneva, in Switzerland later this month between 16-19 June. This will see the world’s risk reduction community gathering, setting the disaster risk reduction agenda for the coming two years and beyond, with this year’s meeting having the added significance of falling in the lead up to the Copenhagen COP-15 this December.

The UNISDR (United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction) will hold its Second Session of the Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction between 16-19 June 2009 at the Geneva International Conference Centre. The deadline for registrations for this conference has been extended until 15 May.
The UNISDR has made it clear that all parliamentarians are welcome to attend this event, so we would encourage those members who might be interested participating, to contact the GLOBE secretariat on how to proceed.

On April 30th, the national Focal Points of GLOBE Europe, a cross-party network of environmentally-minded parliamentarians, met at the European Parliament in Brussels for a 1-day strategy meeting. During the meeting they agreed on the need to call on the EU Council to put forward a satisfactory funding proposal to finance climate change mitigation and adaptation as soon as possible, ahead of the COP-15 in Copenhagen next December. GLOBE Europe Focal Point in the Dutch Second Chamber Boris van der Ham organised a meeting in the Dutch national Parliament on 17 April on CCS (carbon capture and storage), inviting GLOBE EU member Chris Davies as a guest speaker. Mr Davies was the European Parliament’s rapporteur on the CCS directive, which was one of the key pieces of legislation in the recently adopted energy and climate change package.
