Ten priorities for a EU long-term vision for Biodiversity

In the frame of the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB), a two-day European conference entitled “Post-2010 Biodiversity vision and target - The role of protected areas and ecological networks in Europe”  took place in Madrid on 26-27 January. Member States Representatives decide to maintain the 20% binding target for 2020 in response to the Copenhagen Accord

The 30-odd signatories to the Copenhagen Accord (responsible for more than 80% of the global CO2 emissions) should submit their greenhouse gas reduction pledges in the coming days: the United Nations have fixed a 31 January deadline for signatories to commit to CO2 emissions cuts. The proposal of a 30% emissions reduction target has been debated by member state representatives on Wednesday 20 January in Brussels. Despite pressures coming from several member states to upgrade unilaterally the emissions cuts target to 30% compared to 1990 levels, it turns out that the initial offer of a binding 20% reduction will be maintained…

Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero presents Spanish Presidency’s priorities before the European Parliament

Listing the Spanish Presidency’s priorities during a debate at the European Parliament on Wednesday 20 January, Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero stressed that the right response to the economic crisis must be the first goal. He also said that Spain would focus on building "an energy common market" to help reduce EU energy dependence, creating a "digital internal market to boost productivity and e-commerce, making industry more sustainable (including the electric car project) to combat climate change and investing in research and education, to enable Europe to become "a leading player".
