Resource Intelligent Europe

The Resource Intelligent Europe network (RIE), the first working group of GLOBE EU and the Bee, was born at the dinner conversation with the UN International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management hosted by GLOBE EU at the European Parliament, on 31st May 2010.

The RIE Declaration was launched  at the European Parliament lunch debate 'The Year Ahead of Davos' - click here for a list of participants at the launch, and on the image to access the text.

Issues

In the run-up to the Davos World Resources Forum in September 2011, the RIE will contribute to the discussions on the resource efficiency agenda, from resource security and fair distribution to carbon accounting and the functioning of the ETS.

Over the coming months the RIE workshops will focus on, among other issues:

  • the leading resource efficiency policies of Japan;
  • the role of the EU research and development policies as drivers of the resource efficiency agenda;
  • the need to set priority resource efficiency targets;
  • the "Lease Society" and the vision of the Value Extracted Tax on the basis of scarcity as possible solutions to the rebound effect which follows resource efficiency increases, and to the ongoing unemployment crisis in traditional sectors;
  • the Peak Oil resource crisis;
  • Innovating with less materials? - Best Practices in Technological and Non-Technological Innovation for Job Creation and Resource Efficiency
